Kagrra,

Kagrra,

‘Utakata’ {‘Evanescence’} *
by Kagrra,

Wishes came raining down on you,
I’m quietly surpassing my sadness,
hoping we can meet again one day,
I recall your profile as you were crying,

Time flows slowly,
and I remember things from the distant past,
The star we saw on that day, shining brighter than any other,
We surely felt eternity,

Wishes came raining down on you,
I’m quietly surpassing my sadness,
hoping we can meet again one day,
I recall your profile as you were crying,

The fleeting, scattered memories I held,
Like flowers vividly in full bloom,
I wonder how many cycles of the passing seasons

I’ll spend until this voice will be heard by you?

The inside of my heart is overflowing with you,
so much that some day I’ll be drowned by my tears that flow
no matter how many times we repeat meeting and parting,

Wishes came raining down on you,
At the end of revolving fate,
I believe that one day we’ll meet again,
I’m singing those feelings now,

The fleeting, scattered memories I held,
Like flowers vividly in full bloom,
If they revolve the passing seasons many times,
Will this voice be heard by you?
If I had wings on this back,
I’d chase after you who departed**,
Tying together the thread of my memories that break off,
Wanting to embrace you one more time,

Wishes came raining down on you,
I’m quietly surpassing my sadness,

「I think the profile of you crying, thinking/hoping we’ll meet again one day」

「I wonder how many times do I spend the passing seasons until you can hear this voice」

「The inside of my hear it overflowing with you to the extent which some day I drown in the tears that flow no matter how many times we repeat meeting and parting」

「I’m believing that we’ll meet again one day/I’m singing these feelings now」

  2. Hello antares! (:

I’m sorry for not asking this when I first commented! But I am interested in subbing “Utakata” too! May I please have your permission to use the translation that you have posted? (I thought that it was better to ask again than to assume that you would be fine with it!)

    Thank you! (:

  3. Sure, go ahead.
Actually, I just now looked it over since you asked to use it and fixed it up a bit cause I found a typo. ^_^; So now it’s better than before and as polished as I can make it.

  4. Oh, thank you! (: Also, can you please help me with the following? I am making extremely minor changes to your translation so that the English subtitles will follow the Japanese lyrics as closely as possible when it is being sung! So, it would be great if you could check if the following changes are consistent with the meaning of your translation?

    1. “I recall your profile as you were crying, and hope one day we can meet once again” will become “If, one day, we can meet once again, I will recall your profile as you were crying”

    2. “The inside of my heart is overflowing with you/
so much that some day I’ll be drowned by my tears that flow/
no matter how many times we repeat meeting and parting” will become “Meeting and parting,/ No matter how many times we repeat them/ Some day, my tears that flow,/ Will drown me,/ As the inside of my heart is overflowing with you”

    3. “Supposing I had wings on this back,/ Chasing after you who departed,/ Tying together the thread of my memories that break off,/ Wanting to embrace you one more time” will become “If I had wings on my back,/ I would chase after you who has departed/ Tying together the thread of my memories that break off,/ One more time, I want to embrace you”

I hope that I am not offending you with this request! I just thought that it would be great if people who don’t really know Japanese (like me) can recognize the meaning of the few words that they know in the subtitles. Words such as “negai”, “itsuka”, “mou ichido” etc. Thank you so much! (:

  5. No problem, that’s a good idea. It really does help when you’re trying to listen closely for what you know, and the changes don’t significantly alter the meaning.

The reason I switch around the order of things in my translations is because they’re in a static text format and English and Japanese word order is sometimes so different that it just can’t translate the same way, otherwise it won’t make sense. I did this translation quite a while ago, and now that I look at it closely, there were some parts that were a bit awkward. ^_^’ But yeah, when it comes to subbing it’s a whole other process with its own constraints and considerations, and I think it is best to keep it timed as close as possible.🙂
